About the Qualification Process

The Qualification Process for Canadian Men's and Women's teams to the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings has been designed to be fair for all competing teams and ensure that representation consists of Canada's best.

A pool of sixteen (16) teams of each gender will qualify over the period of September 2006 to May 2009 (three curling seasons). Of those 16 teams, 4 will move directly to the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings (Canadian Curling Trials) and the other 12 teams will compete in a Pre-Trials event to subsequently qualify another 4 teams to the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings.

Determining Teams 13-16

To determine teams 13-16, we will use a sliding scale for the CTRS points earned in the three year period. Also, teams will be allowed to count their best 10 events (men); 8 events (women) per season 8 and 6 for the 2006-2007 season only). The value of CTRS points on of May 1, 2009 will be as follows:

  • 2006-2007 season – 70% of original value
  • 2007-2008 season – 85% of original value
  • 2008-2009 season – 100% of original value

Team 13

Men - Most CTRS points from September 2006 to April 2009 of teams not already qualified - Bob Ursel
Women - Most CTRS points from September 2006 to April 2009 of teams not already qualified - Krista McCarville

Team 14 and 15

Men - Most CTRS points from September 2007 to April 2009 of teams not already qualified - Greg McAulay and Daley Peters
Women - Most CTRS points from September 2007 to April 2009 of teams not already qualified - Cathy King & Eve Bélisle

Team 16

Men - Most CTRS points from September 2008 to April 2009 of teams not already qualified - Ted Appelman
Women - Most CTRS points from September 2008 to April 2009 of teams not already qualified - Crystal Webster

Note: If there is a multiple winner(s) in any given season, the replacement team(s) will come from the highest ranking team from the CTRS not already qualified from the year the berth was originally assigned. The runners-up in any of the identified specific events will not earn a Trials or pre-Trial berth under any circumstance.

Qualifying Directly for the 2009 Roar of the Rings

A total of four (4) teams per gender will qualify directly for the 2009 Roar of the Rings.

On May 1, 2009 we will identify 2 more men's teams, to join Kevin Martin and Glenn Howard, and 3 more women's teams, to join Jennifer Jones, to advance directly to the 2009 Roar of the Rings.

The four (4) teams of each gender that qualify to go directly to the 2009 Roar of the Rings (Canadian Curling Trials) will be identified from the following criteria in order of priority until the 4 teams of each gender are chosen:

  • a team is the CTRS leader for any 2 of the 3 qualification years (no longer available)
  • a team wins any 3 of the 12 specific events
  • the team - not already qualified - with the highest 3 year CTRS (2006-07; 2007-08; 2008-09) total points (points will be tabulated using sliding scale shown above)
  • teams - not already qualified - with the highest 2 year CTRS (2007-08; 2008-09) total points (points will be tabulated using sliding scale shown above)

** Events are: Canada Cup (men & women); Players Championships (men & women); Brier (men); Tournament of Hearts (women); world championships (men & women)

Note: Should there be a duplicate qualifier in any of these four scenarios (1 - 4), we will continue to use the same criteria (1 - 4) to ultimately identify four different teams.

2009 Pre-Trials Qualifier

The remaining 12 teams of each gender will then proceed to the Pre-Trials Event where they would compete for the remaining four berths.

This event will be held in early November of 2009 with both genders competing at the same site at the same time. The format is a twelve (12) team triple knockout qualifying four (4) teams of each gender to the 2009 Roar of the Rings.
