"Descending down from the rolling hills into the fringes of the grasslands; 80-some boxcars dutifully following behind a trio of throaty diesel locomotives, powering across the valley floor with unfailing serenity. Atop a high bluff outside Swift Current, a lone mule deer stands and stares downward; the sun shines behind him, sparkling through each breath of his nostrils--180 pounds of muscle and potential strength; a glimpse of fragments of history, and of the loneliness of the future. Five kilometers down the road and 15-20 antelope bound through the field on the right, single-file, shivering under barbed wire fence and prancing through the crusty snow; on the left side of the road, 15-20 more lie casually on the flat plain, looking for all the world as though the world does not pass them by so much as revolve around that simple moment of peace and stillness. And on the drive home, it is the sky again, impossibly large and fathomless, stretching on and around like promises half-whispered; the sunlight gleams on fields of white snow and golden stubble--it is a warm, miraculously rich color that sings of treasure and where that should lie—This is Saskatchewan."
