SOREL-TRACY, January 22...Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) eliminated defending Canadian champion Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) to claim second place and a berth in the men's semi-final Saturday night at 7:30 pm at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, presented by AMJ Campbell Van Lines.

Both teams had entered the final draw of the round robin Friday afternoon with 8-3 records, knowing the winner would advance to the semi-final against Saskatchewan, while the loser would be out.

Although the 'Islanders' scored one in the first, it was Ontario which did all the damage the rest of the way.   Walker took one in the second to tie, then proceeded to steal a single in the third end, a single in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth for an insurmountable lead 7-1 lead.

Ontario thus finished in second spot, behind 10-2 Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg), with an 9-3 record, the same as Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina), but was awarded second because of its round robin win. 

They'll now meet in Saturday evening's semi-final at 7:30 pm, with the winner facing Manitoba in Sunday's 7:30 pm final at Le Colisée, live on TSN.

On the women's side, Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa) completed the round robin with a perfect 12-0 mark, downing Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall), 12-3.

Ontario, which had already clinched a berth in Sunday's final, live at 2:30 pm on TSN, will try to become only the fourth women's team since 1971 to go undefeated and win the title.  The last to do so was Manitoba's Cathy Overton, who went 11-0 in 1989 in Winnipeg in capturing the Canadian title.

Saskatchewan's Stefanie Miller went unbeaten in 2001 in St. Catharines during the round robin, but lost the final to Prince Edward Island's Suzanne Gaudet.

Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) claimed second spot with a 9-3 record to advance to the semi-final Saturday evening at 7:30 pm.

Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon), British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria) and Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary) finished tied for third with 8-4 marks, after British Columbia defeated Nova Scotia, 8-3 Friday afternoon.

Since Saskatchewan defeated both during the round robin, it advances to the second tiebreaker at 2:30 pm on Saturday.  Alberta plays British Columbia at 9:30 am Saturday morning in the first tiebreaker, with the winner advancing to face Saskatchewan.

Other men's game scores from Draw 20 saw Nova Scotia beat British Columbia, 6-4; Yukon clipped Quebec 6-4 and Newfoundland and Labrador was a 6-5 winner over Northwest Territories.

Le champion en titre est éliminé, les participants aux éliminatoires sont définis

L'Ontario (Jake Walker de Kitchener) a éliminé le champion canadien en titre de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Brett Gallant de Charlottetown) pour s'emparer du second rang et un laissez-passer pour la demi-finale de samedi soir à 19h30 aux championnats canadiens M&M Meat Shops de curling junior, présentés par AMJ Campbell Van Lines.

Les deux équipes disputaient leur dernier match des rondes préliminaires, vendredi après-midi, avec un dossier de 8-3 et sachant que le gagnant allait accéder à la demi-finale contre la Saskatchewan et que le perdant serait éliminé.

Même si les iliens ont marqué un point au premier bout, c'est l'Ontario qui a fait tout le dommage tout au cours du match. Walker en a marqué un au deuxième, puis en a volé un au 3e, un au 4e, trois au 5e et un au 6e pour prendre une avance insurmontable de 7-1.

L'Ontario a ainsi terminé au deuxième rang derrière le Manitoba (10-2) (Alex Forrest de Winnipeg) avec un dossier de 9-3, le même que la Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy de Regina), mais qui a été placé deuxième en vertu de sa victoire dans les rondes préliminaires. 

Ils vont maintenant s'affronter dans la demi-finale de samedi soir à 19h30. Le gagnant rencontrera le Manitoba dans la finale de dimanche à 19h30 au Colisée; le match sera télédiffusé en direct sur le réseau TSN.

Chez les femmes, l'Ontario (Rachel Homan d'Ottawa) a terminé les rondes préliminaires avec un dossier parfais de 12-0 en battant l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Sarah Fullerton de Cornwall), 12-3.
L'Ontario qui était déjà assurée d'un laissez-passer pour la finale de dimanche à 14h30, présentée sur le réseau TSN tentera de devenir la quatrième équipe féminine depuis 1971 d'avoir été invaincue et gagnant du titre.  Les deux dernières à le faire furent la Manitobaine Cathy Overton avec un dossier de 11-0 en 1989 à  Winnipeg, Stefanie Miller de la Saskatchewan en 2001 à  St. Catharines, mais qui a perdu le match final devant l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Suzanne Gaudet).

Le Nord de l'Ontario (Kendra Lilly de Sudbury) a remporté le second rang avec un dossier de 9-3 pour accéder à la demi-finale de samedi soir à 19h30.

La Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen de Saskatoon), la Colombie-Britannique (Dailene Sivertson de Victoria) et Alberta (Nadine Chyz de Calgary) ont terminé à égalité en troisième place avec un dossier de 8-4 après la victoire de la Colombie-Britannique sur la Nouvelle-Écosse, 8-3, vendredi après-midi.

Vu que la Saskatchewan a battu les deux équipes durant les rondes préliminaires, elle accède au deuxième bris d'égalité à 14h30, samedi.  L'Alberta affronte la Colombie-Britannique à 9h30, samedi matin dans le premier bris d'égalité; la gagnante se mesurera à la Saskatchewan.

Autres résultats chez les hommes: la Nouvelle-Écosse a battu la Colombie-Britannique, 6-4; le Yukon a défait le Québec, 6-4, et Terre-Neuve et Labrador a gagné, 6-5 contre les Territoires du Nord-Ouest.
