SOREL-TRACY, January 20...Saskatchewan has won a leading 10 Canadian junior women's titles since the championship began in 1971 in Vancouver.

So it's no surprise that the province always seems to send competitive teams...and it has another one this year in the Trish Paulsen squad, representing the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon.

Wednesday afternoon, Saskatchewan clipped New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John), 6-4 to improve to 7-2, tied with Northern Ontario for second, behind unbeaten (7-0) Ontario.

"We're doing alright so far," said the 19-year-old Paulsen, a commerce student at the University of Saskatchewan.   "We're happy how we're playing.  Coming here, we just wanted to play our best.  We weren't sure what teams were going to be here."

Paulsen also has her 18-year-old sister Kari on the team as lead, along with third Melissa Hoffman and second Sarah Collin.  It's their first year together, with Collin the new addition. 

Paulsen's dad, Art, played in the 1985 Labatt Brier in Moncton, as lead for Saskatchewan skip Eugene Hritzuk, finishing third after losing the semi-final to eventual winner, Northern Ontario's Al Hackner.

Paulsen has faced skips such as Ontario's Rachel Homan and British Columbia's Dailene Sivertson back in 2006, and played the Alberta team this past fall.  But that's it.  She'd also played in several provincials, before finally winning it this year.

She'll face Homan Thursday afternoon, then has Quebec and Manitoba to finish up the robin robin.

The top three teams make the playoffs, with the first place team getting a bye to Sunday's final, live on TSN.

In other games, Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) kept pace with a 7-5 win over Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater).  British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria) improved to 5-3 with a 15-1 pasting of Northwest Territories (Amanda Moizis of Hay River), joined by Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary), which beat Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall), 7-4.

On the men's side, the 7-1 leader, Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg) was idle, as was 6-1 Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener).

But Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) dropped to 7-2 with an extra end 7-6 loss to New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay).  Defending champion Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) managed another escape to go to 7-3, this time with a tight 8-6 win over Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton), stealing an insurance run in the 10th after a failed takeout by Bottcher.

The other games saw British Columbia (Tyler Klymchuk of Langley) go to 5-3, defeating winless Northwest Territories (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 6-4.  Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) moved to 5-4 by hammering Northern Ontario (Christian Tolusso of Thunder Bay), 9-2.

The next draw is at 7:00 pm Wednesday evening at Le Colisée and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine.

Les femmes de la Saskatchewan bien dans la course

SOREL-TRACY, le 20 janvier... La Saskatchewan détient le record avec 10 titres canadiens chez les femmes depuis le début du championnat en 1971 à Vancouver.

Ce n'est donc pas une surprise que la province semble toujours envoyer des équipes compétitives et elle en a une, cette année, la formation de Trish Paulsen qui représente le Nutana Curling Club de Saskatoon.

Mercredi après-midi, la Saskatchewan a battu le Nouveau-Brunswick (Jessica Daigle de Saint John), 6-4 est a maintenant une fiche de 7-2 à égalité avec le Nord de l'Ontario au second rang derrière l'équipe invaincue de l'Ontario (7-0).

"Ça va très bien," a déclaré la jeune femme de 19 ans, Paulsen, une étudiante en commerce à l'Université de la Saskatchewan.   "Nous sommes satisfaites de la façon dont nous performons.  En venant ici, nous voulions faire de notre mieux. Nous n'étions pas sûres comment nous allions réagir."

Paulsen a aussi sa soeur de 18 ans, Kari qui joue 1re dans l'équipe avec la 3e Melissa Hoffman et la 2e Sarah Collin.  C'est leur première année ensemble avec Collin, la nouvelle membre. 

Le père de Paulsen, Art, a participé au Labatt Brier de 1985 à Moncton comme 1er pour le capitaine de la Saskatchewan, Eugene Hritzuk; ils ont terminé au 3e rang et ont perdu la demi-finale contre l'éventuel gagnant, Al Hackner du Nord de l'Ontario.

Paulsen a affronté des capitaines telles Rachel Homan de l'Ontario et Dailene Sivertson de la Colombie-Britannique en 2006 et a joué contre l'Alberta à l'automne dernier.  Mais voilà. Elle a également joué dans plusieurs championnats provinciaux avant de finalement sortir gagnante, cette année.

Elle va affronter Homan, jeudi après-midi et puis le Québec et le Manitoba pour terminer les matchs préliminaires.

Les trois meilleures équipes participeront aux éliminatoires; l'équipe au premier rang accèdera directement à la finale de dimanche qui sera télédiffusée en direct sur le réseau TSN.

Dans les autres matchs, le Nord de l'Ontario (Kendra Lilly de Sudbury) a gagné 7-5 contre la Nouvelle-Écosse (Tara LeGay de Bridgewater).  La Colombie-Britannique (Dailene Sivertson de Victoria) est maintenant à 5-3 après une victoire de 15-1 contre les Territoires du Nord-Ouest (Amanda Moizis de Hay River) à égalité avec l'Alberta (Nadine Chyz de Calgary) qui a battu l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Sarah Fullerton de Cornwall), 7-4.

Chez les hommes, le meneur à 7-1, le Manitoba (Alex Forrest de Winnipeg) était au repos ainsi que l'Ontario (Jake Walker de Kitchener) à 6-1.

Mais la Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy de Regina) a baissé à 7-2 en perdant 7-6, dans une manche supplémentaire face au Nouveau-Brunswick (Josh Barry de Rothesay).  Le champion en titre de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Brett Gallant de Charlottetown) s'en est tiré une autre fois pour avancer à 7-3, cette fois-ci avec une victoire serrée de 8-6 contre l'Alberta (Brendan Bottcher d'Edmonton); il a volé au 10e bout après la sortie ratée de Bottcher.

Dans les autres matchs, la Colombie-Britannique (Tyler Klymchuk de Langley) à 5-3 a défait les Territoires du Nord-Ouest (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 6-4.  La Nouvelle-Écosse  (Scott Garnett de Halifax) est passée à 5-4 en humiliant le Nord de l'Ontario (Christian Tolusso de Thunder Bay), 9-2.
