SOREL-TRACY, January 19...As always, there's no substitute for experience, and the Northern Ontario women are proving that second time around.

Skipped by Kendra Lilly of Sudbury, the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club team moved to 5-1 at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, just behind the unbeaten (5-0) but idle leader, Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa), after a 10-3 dismantling of Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall) in Tuesday morning's Draw 10.

Last year, Lilly played third for skip Vanessa Maloney at the Canadian Juniors in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, along with second Jenny Gates and lead Kaitlynd Burns.   And they did alright in their first national appearance, finishing in a three-way tie for fifth with a 6-6 mark.

This year, Lilly has taken the reins, adding third Kim Curtin, to go along with Gates and Burns.   

"We're playing pretty well," said the 18-year-old Lilly, a sports administration student at Laurentian.  "We're just trying to hold our ground right now, keep winning a few games and hopefully make the playoffs.

"Our team last year played together for eight years.  Our team dynamics were awesome.  She  (Vanessa) brought a lot of experience, but Kim also does.  She's been to the University nationals, so she's helped a lot and been a very good vice for me.

"Last year, we came here and said, 'we're just going to have fun, go through the whole experience.'  This year, we know what the competition is like, we know it's going to be a really long week, so our expectations are pretty high this year.  There's been no surprises, really.  All the teams are strong, so we're prepared for that."

Tied with Northern Ontario for second at 5-1 is Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon), which bested Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary), 9-8.   In other games, New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John) edged British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria), 7-6, stealing a single in an extra end after tying the game with a deuce in the 10th.   Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay) trounced Northwest Territories (Amanda Moizis of Hay River), 22-2.

In men's, undefeated Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg), at 5-0, had a bye.  Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) clipped Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton), 7-6, taking two in the deciding 10th frame to move to 5-1. 

Defending champion Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) extended its winning streak to four games with a 9-6 win over Northern Ontario (Christian Tolusso of Thunder Bay) to move to 5-2.  Idle Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) is at 4-1.

British Columbia (Tyler Klymchuk of Langley) improved to 4-2, tied with Alberta, after a 12-3 trouncing of New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) while Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) took care of Northwest Territories (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 9-3 to move to 4-3.

Play continues with draws at 2:30 pm and 7:00 pm, at both Colisée Cardin and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine.

Les femmes du Nord de l'Ontario gardent le rythme aux Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, le 19 janvier... Comme toujours, il n'y a aucun substitut pour l'expérience et les femmes du Nord de l'Ontario en sont la preuve pour une deuxième fois.

Dirigée par Kendra Lilly de Sudbury, l'équipe du Idylwylde Golf & Country Club est à 5-1 aux championnats canadiens M&Meat Shops de curling junior, tout près de l'équipe invaincue (5-0), l'Ontario (Rachel Homan d'Ottawa) après avoir défait l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard,10-3 (Sarah Fullerton de Cornwall), mardi matin.

L'an dernier, Lilly a joué 3e pour la capitaine Vanessa Maloney aux Juniors canadiens à Salmon Arm, Colombie-Britannique, avec la 2e Jenny Gates et la 1re Kaitlynd Burns.  Elles ont bien fait à leur première participation nationale terminant à égalité au 5e rang avec une fiche de 6-6.

Cette année, Lilly a pris les rênes en ajoutant la 3e Kim Curtin pour compléter l'équipe avec Gates et Burns.   

"Nous jouons assez bien," a mentionné la jeune femme de 18 ans, Lilly, étudiante en administration sportive au Laurentian.  "Nous essayons de leur tenir tête pour le moment, de remporter quelques matchs et espérer participer aux éliminatoires.

"Les membres de notre équipe de l'an dernier ont joué ensemble pendant huit ans.  Notre dynamique d'équipe était merveilleuse. Elle (Vanessa) a apporté beaucoup d'expérience, mais Kim aussi.  Elle est allée au championnat national universitaire et elle nous a beaucoup aidées et a été une bonne vice-capitaine pour moi.

"L'année dernière, nous sommes venues et nous avons dit: "nous allons nous amuser et faire l'expérience."  Cette année, nous savons ce qu'est la compétition, nous savons que ce sera une longue semaine, alors nos attentes sont réellement élevées. Il n'y a pas eu de surprises.  Toutes les équipes sont bonnes et nous sommes préparées pour y faire face."

À égalité avec le Nord de l'Ontario au second rang à 5-1, on retrouve la Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen de Saskatoon) qui a eu le meilleur sur l'Alberta (Nadine Chyz de Calgary), 9-8.  Dans les autres matchs, le Nouveau-Brunswick (Jessica Daigle de Saint John) a défait la Colombie-Britannique (Dailene Sivertson de Victoria), 7-6, volant un point au bout supplémentaire après avoir égalé le score avec deux points au 10e.  La Nouvelle-Écosse (Tara LeGay) a littéralement écrasé les Territoires du Nord-Ouest (Amanda Moizis de Hay River), 22-2.

Le champion en titre de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Brett Gallant de Charlottetown) a allongé sa suite de victoires à quatre avec un gain de 9-6 contre le Nord de l'Ontario (Christian Tolusso de Thunder Bay) et a ainsi amélioré sa fiche à 5-2.  L'Ontario (Jake Walker de Kitchener) est à 4-1.

La Colombie-Britannique (Tyler Klymchuk de Langley) est à 4-2, à égalité avec l'Alberta après un gain de 12-3 sur le Nouveau-Brunswick (Josh Barry de Rothesay) tandis que la Nouvelle-Écosse (Scott Garnett de Halifax) a battu les Territoires du Nord-Ouest (Colin Miller de Yellowknife), 9-3 pour avancer à 4-3.
