SOREL-TRACY, January 18...While Ontario's Rachel Homan is deservedly generating a lot of ink as the undefeated leader on the women's side, there's another team from Ontario that is doing almost as well at the 2010 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors.

That's the Jake Walker team from Kitchener.  After a tough extra end 5-4 loss to leader Manitoba this morning, the Walker foursome rebounded with an 8-6 win over New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) in Monday evening's Draw 9 to move into a three-way tie for second, along with idle Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) and Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton), all with 4-1 records.

After New Brunswick opened with a deuce, Ontario took command with a four-spot in the third end and never trailed after that.

"That was a good end.  We all made our shots in that end, thankfully," recalled Walker.  "We actually had a shot for five, but I decided not to do it, and just draw for four because there was a risk to it.  I figured either take four or hit for five and risk giving up one, so I took the four.  We didn't play our best, though."

Still, a win is a win.

In this morning's game, Ontario had a chance for a winning deuce in the 10th end but Walker's final stone hit and rolled too far.  Thus, Ontario was only able to count one to force the extra frame, before suffering its first defeat.

"It could have gone either way.  It was a good game," continued Walker, a 20-year-old Electrical Engineering student at the University of Waterloo.   "We played well.  We were pretty confident (coming here).  My vice (Craig Van Ymeren) and second (Geoff Chambers) made the final before (losing to Quebec's William Dion in 2008).  That certainly helps me - their experience.  It helps a lot. So far, so good."

The men's leader is still undefeated Manitoba (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg), which remained perfect at 5-0 with a 9-6 win over Newfoundland and Labrador (Kelly Schuh of St. John's).

In other games, Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) won its third straight, 7-4 over Quebec (Kevin Rivest of Montreal) to move into fifth place at 4-2, while Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) walloped Yukon (Thomas Scoffin of Whitehorse), 13-3.

In women's, the Homan squad from Ottawa rolled on, an 8-4 winner over New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John) to improve to 5-0.  Tied for second with 4-1 marks are Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) and Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon), both of whom enjoyed byes.

Manitoba (Breanne Meakin of Winnipeg) moved into a three-way tie for fourth with British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria) and Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary), all at 3-2, after outshooting Newfoundland and Labrador (Jen Cunningham of  St. John's), 9-6.

Yukon (Sarah Koltun of Whitehorse) took three in the 10th to upend Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater), 6-4 while Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall) was an 8-4 winner over Quebec (Camille-Marie Lapierre of Otterburn Park).

The round robin continues on Tuesday with draws at 10:00 am, 2:30 pm and 7:00 pm ET.

Les hommes du Manitoba et les femmes de l'Ontario à 5-0 aux Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, le 18 janvier... Tandis que Rachel Homan de l'Ontario fait couler beaucoup d'encre avec raison en tant que la meneuse invaincue chez les femmes, il y a une autre équipe de l'Ontario qui fait presque aussi bien aux championnats canadiens M&Meat Shops 2010 de curling junior.

C'est l'équipe de Jake Walker de Kitchener.  Après une défaite amère de 5-4 dans une manche supplémentaire aux mains du meneur, le Manitoba, ce matin, le quatuor de Walker a rebondi avec une victoire de 8-6 sur le Nouveau-Brunswick (Josh Barry de Rothesay) dans la soirée et se retrouve à égalité au second rang avec la Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy de Regina) et l'Alberta (Brendan Bottcher d'Edmonton) à 4-1.

Le Nouveau-Brunswick a débuté en marquant deux points, mais l'Ontario a pris les commandes en prenant 4 points au 3e bout et n'a jamais ralenti par la suite.

"Ce fut une bonne manche.  Nous avons réussi tous nos lancers," a dit Walker.  "Nous avions la possibilité d'en prendre cinq, mais j'ai décidé autrement et de seulement effectuer un placement bon pour quatre points, car il y avait un risque.  J'ai pensé en prendre quatre ou de frapper pour cinq et risquer d'en donner un, alors j'ai opté pour quatre. Cependant, nous n'étions pas au somme de notre forme."

Mais, un gain c'est un gain.

Dans le match de ce matin, l'Ontario avait la chance de marquer deux points au 10e bout, mais la dernière pierre de Walker a frappé et a roulé trop loin. Alors, l'Ontario n'a été capable de compter qu'un seul point pour aller en supplémentaire avant de subir la défaite.

"Ça aurait pu tout changer.  Ce fut un bon match," a ajouté Walker, un étudiant de 20 ans en génie électrique à l'Université de Waterloo.   "Nous avons bien joué.  Nous étions très confiants en venant ici. Mon vice (Craig Van Ymeren) et mon 2e (Geoff Chambers) se sont rendus en finale auparavant (perdant devant William Dion du Québec en 2008).  Leur expérience m'a sûrement aidé.  Ça aide beaucoup. À cette date, c'est bon."

Le meneur chez les hommes est toujours invaincu, le Manitoba (Alex Forrest de Winnipeg) qui présente une fiche parfaite de 5-0 après un gain de 9-6 devant Terre-Neuve et Labrador (Kelly Schuh de St. John's).

Dans les autres matchs, l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Brett Gallant de Charlottetown) a remporté son troisième match de suite, 7-4, contre le Québec (Kevin Rivest de Montréal) et se retrouve au 5e rang à 4-2 tandis que la Nouvelle-Écosse (Scott Garnett de Halifax) a lavé le Yukon (Thomas Scoffin de Whitehorse), 13-3.

Chez les femmes, la formation de Homan d'Ottawa continue sa route victorieuse (fiche de 5-0) avec un gain de 8-4 aux dépens du Nouveau-Brunswick (Jessica Daigle de Saint John).  À égalité au second rang avec une fiche de 4-1, on retrouve le Nord de l'Ontario (Kendra Lilly de Sudbury) et la Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen de Saskatoon).
