Ontario women, Saskatchewan men lead at the Juniors

SOREL-TRACY, January 17...Ontario (Rachel Homan of Ottawa) is the only unbeaten women's team at the 2010 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, while Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy of Regina) tops the men's standings after two days of play at Colisée Cardin and Club de curling Aurèle-Racine.

Ontario had a bye Sunday evening but leads its 12 rivals with a 3-0 mark.  Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan are at 3-1, while Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta are deadlocked with 2-1 records.

In Draw 6 results Sunday evening, Saskatchewan (Trish Paulsen of Saskatoon) beat up on Northwest Territories (Amanda Moizis of Hay River), 13-3; Alberta (Nadine Chyz of Calgary) proved a 6-3 winner over Nova Scotia (Tara LeGay of Bridgewater); British Columbia (Dailene Sivertson of Victoria) stole one in the ninth and four in the 10th end for a 9-5 shocker over Prince Edward Island (Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall) and Northern Ontario (Kendra Lilly of Sudbury) had no trouble with New Brunswick (Jessica Daigle of Saint John), 9-2.

On the men's side, three teams have yet to taste defeat - Saskatchewan at 4-0, followed by idle Manitoba  (Alex Forrest of Winnipeg) and Ontario (Jake Walker of Kitchener) at 3-0.  New Brunswick is next at 3-1.

Saskatchewan's Moskowy roared back from a 6-2 fifth end deficit to trim Northwest Territories (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 8-6.   New Brunswick (Josh Barry of Rothesay) fell from the unbeaten ranks, losing to Northern Ontario (Christian Tolusso of Thunder Bay), 9-6.  Nova Scotia (Scott Garnett of Halifax) stole one in the 11th end after taking two in the 10th to hand Alberta (Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton) its first loss as well.

In the other game, Prince Edward Island (Brett Gallant of Charlottetown) set a Juniors
record of 42 career wins (round robin and playoffs) as a skip, defeating British Columbia (Tyler Klymchuk of Langley), 7-4, eclipsing the 41 game-won mark held by Quebec's Martin Crête.  Gallant, the defending Canadian champion, is also making a record-tying sixth Juniors appearance, equalling Brad Gushue of St. John's.

The victory moved Prince Edward Island to 2-2, tied for sixth with Nova Scotia.

Round robin play continues through Friday, after which the first place teams will advance directly to Sunday's finals, live on TSN.  The second and third place teams will meet in semi-finals on Saturday.

The two winners will then represent Canada at the 2010 World Juniors in Flims, Switzerland.

Les femmes de l'Ontario, les hommes de la Saskatchewan mènent aux Juniors

L'Ontario (Rachel Homan d'Ottawa) est la seule équipe féminine toujours invaincue aux championnats canadiens M&M Meat Shops 2010 de curling junior tandis que la Saskatchewan (Braeden Moskowy de Regina) est au premier rang au classement masculin après deux jours de compétition au Colisée Cardin  et au Club de curling Aurèle-Racine.

L'Ontario ne jouait pas, dimanche soir, mais est en tête du classement féminin avec une fiche de 3-0.  Le Nord de l'Ontario et la Saskatchewan sont à 3-1 tandis que le Manitoba, la Colombie-Britannique et l'Alberta sont à égalité avec une fiche de 2-1.

Le Nouveau-Brunswick (Josh Barry de Rothesay) a subi sa première défaite aux mains du Nord de l'Ontario (Christian Tolusso de Thunder Bay), 9-6.  La Nouvelle-Écosse (Scott Garnett de Halifax) a volé un point au 11e bout après en avoir marqué deux au 10e et a ainsi infligé sa première défaite à l'Alberta (Brendan Bottcher d'Edmonton).

Dans l'autre match, l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (Brett Gallant de Charlottetown) a établi un nouveau record aux Juniors avec 42 victoires en carrière (rondes préliminaires et éliminatoires) comme capitaine lorsqu'il a défait la Colombie-Britannique (Tyler Klymchuk de Langley), 7-4, éclipsant la marque de 41 établie par Martin Crête du Québec.  Gallant, le champion canadien en titre, a aussi établi un record à sa sixième participation aux Juniors égalant la marque de Brad Gushue de St. John's.

L'Île-du-Prince-Édouard est maintenant à 2-2 à égalité au sixième rang avec la Nouvelle-Écosse.

Les rondes préliminaires se poursuivent jusqu'à vendredi; ensuite, les équipes au premier rang accèderont directement aux finales de dimanche qui seront présentées en direct sur le réseau TSN. Les équipes au second rang s'affronteront dans les demi-finales, samedi.

Les deux équipes gagnantes représenteront le Canada aux championnats mondiaux de curling junior de 2010 à Flims, Suisse.
