2010 Tim Hortons Brier final summary

HALIFAX, March 14, 2010... ALBERTA (Kevin Koe of Edmonton) defeats ONTARIO (Glenn Howard of Coldwater), 6-5 in an extra end to win the 2010 Tim Hortons Brier at the Metro Centre in Halifax.

It is the first Brier win for skip Kevin Koe, third Blake MacDonald, second Carter Rycroft, lead Nolan Thiessen, alternate Jamie King and coach John Dunn.

It is the 25th Brier win for Alberta since the Canadian men's championship began in 1927, just one behind Manitoba's leading 26 victories.   It's also the third consecutive Brier win for Alberta and the seventh for the province this decade.

The Koe team will now represent Canada at the Capital One world men's curling championship, April 3-11 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, seeking a leading 32nd men's title for Canada since 1959.

As finalists, the Kevin Koe and Glenn Howard teams each earn $40,000 (TV value from cresting exposure).   Third place finisher Northern Ontario (Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie) earns $30,000 while fourth place finisher Newfoundland/Labrador (Brad Gushue of St. John's) receives $20,000.

The Koe team also earns a berth into the 2010 Canada Cup, November 30-December 5 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and a berth into the 2011 World Financial Group Continental Cup, January 13-16 in St. Albert, Alberta.

The Hec Gervais Playoff MVP Award, selected by TSN, was presented to Alberta skip Kevin Koe.

The Shot of the Week, selected by TSN, went to Ontario third Richard Hart, for his raise takeout through a narrow port in the sixth end of the Page 1-2 game.

The final attendance at the Metro Centre for the nine days, including today's final game attendance of 7,233, was 107,242.
