HALIFAX, March 12 - It was nip, tuck, to say nothing of tense, but Ontario's Glenn Howard finally escaped with his 12th straight victory at the Tim Hortons Brier on Friday night.

Facing the youngest skip in the competition — 23 years his junior — 47-year-old Howard and his team of Richard Hart, Brent Laing and Craig Savill required all their guile and a few big shots to wrestle control from Brad Jacobs's Northern Ontario entry in the Page One-Two playoff game, resulting in Ontario catapulting directly to Sunday's championship final at 8 p.m. ET following an 8-6 victory.

The win plants the Howard team, playing in its fifth straight Brier, in its fourth championship final. In three previous Brier finishes, Howard won one, lost two.

Northern Ontario jockeyed in front of the contest by stealing a critical fourth-end point after a third-end triple but a patient Ontario unit finally scored three of its own in the eighth, held Jacobs to a single in the ninth when Jacobs was off on a four-foot draw by a hair's width, and left Howard with an easy shot for a winning deuce at the finish.

"My team made every shot for me," said Howard afterward.  "I missed a few early and got a little bit down on myself. They kept picking me up, making great shots and Richie (Hart) made the shot-of-the-week through the port in the sixth. That gave us the momentum.

"Obviously it was an entertaining curling game. I thought we had them in trouble a lot, I let them off a few times, and then got some breaks out of Brad and, lo and behold, we were tied up coming home with the hammer, just where we wanted to be. And Craig made the two great shots on the guards in the 10th.

"They made a lot of great shots, too, and we barely beat them. But we're totally satisfied. You can't win unless you get to the final, so it feels great."

Jacobs doubled out of trouble in the first end, which was blanked, then yielded two in the second despite executing another double-kill.

But Howard missed a runback in the third, then was teased into attempting a thin double on a half-guarded stone and wrecked, leaving Jacobs a draw for three in the third.

Howard executed a near-freeze in the fourth but Jacobs chipped it out, leaving his foe looking at three, and Howard was inches short drawing for one.

With a 4-2 lead, Jacobs made another double in the fifth, left Howard a shot for two but the Ontario skip threw light and rolled out the shooter, settling for one.

"It's funny with a guy like Glenn Howard," said Hart later. "When you say he's struggling if he misses two or three shots, it's like the sky is falling. He does that now and then but it rarely costs us."

Howard appeared to have a multiple count set up in the sixth but Jacobs executed a last-rock bump to save the end and take a 5-3 edge.

Then came the turning point.

"It was the seventh end," said Jacobs. "When I didn't hold the shooter on an easy wide-open hit we allowed him to blank.  Then he put a good end together in the eighth and we struggled for sure. If I hit and stick in the seventh we're forcing him to one and it's a totally different game."

Both third E.J. Harnden and Jacobs missed shots in the eighth to set up the Howard three-spot. Jacobs needed a critical roll with his last rock but didn't get it and left his opponent an open hit for the multiple count.

"We definitely let it slip away," said Jacobs. "We didn't play as well as we wanted to, not as well as we have the last six or seven games. But that's why we wanted to get into the One-Two playoff game, we get two cracks at him.

"You see him missing early on and you can't help thinking, hey, maybe we're going to beat this guy if he's having an off day. But we gave it right back to him. It was a little unfortunate, but that's the name of the game sometimes.  I thought I played pretty good but missed a couple of key shots and when you do that against Glenn Howard you're not going to win the game.

Ontario outpointed its opponents at every position — 89-81 in percentage overall.

Northern Ontario, now nursing a 9-3 record, will await the winner of Saturday's 12-noon sudden-death playoff between Alberta and Newfoundland/Labrador for a semi-final opponent today at 7:30 ET.

"We go right back on the same sheet," said Jacobs of the semi. "It was cool, quite the experience and we know what to expect now. We're going to let this one go, almost immediately, and get ready for the next one."

Jacobs said it was his team's third loss in a Page One-Two game.

"We lost in the provincials this year and once previously but came back both times to go to the Brier. I think we can learn from that. The momentum you get by playing the semi-final sometimes puts you in good shape for the final."

L'Ontario accède à la finale du Brier Tim Hortons

HALIFAX, le 12 mars – L'intensité était à son comble, mais, Glenn Howard de l'Ontario s'en est tiré avec sa 12e victoire de suite au Brier Tim Hortons, vendredi soir.

Faisant face au plus jeune capitaine du tournoi, son junior de 23 ans, Howard, 47 ans, et son équipe formée de Richard Hart, Brent Laing et Craig Savill ont eu recours à toute leur astuce et quelques excellents lancers pour garder difficilement le contrôle du match 1 vs 2 contre Brad Jacobs du Nord de l'Ontario. En fin de compte, l'Ontario accède directement à la finale du championnat, dimanche à 20h00 Est après sa victoire de 8-6.

Avec cette victoire, l'équipe de Howard qui en est à sa cinquième participation consécutive au Brier, jouera dans sa quatrième finale du championnat. Lors des trois finales précédentes, Howard en a remporté une et perdu deux.

Le Nord de l'Ontario a pris l'avance en volant un point important au 4e bout après avoir réussi un bout de 3 points au 3e, mais l'Ontario bien patient a marqué trois points au 8e, Jacobs a inscrit un seul point au 9e quand Jacobs n'a pas réussi son placement dans le quatre pieds; Howard a profité d'un coup facile pour l'emporter par deux points à la manche finale.

"Mon équipe a réussi tous ses lancers," a mentionné Howard après.
"J'en ai  raté quelques-uns plus tôt et j'étais un peu dépité. Ils ont continué à réussir d'excellents coups et Richie (Hart) a réussi le lancer de la semaine en passant à travers un espace restreint au 6e bout. Ça nous a donné l'élan espéré.

"Il est évident que ce fut un match de curling captivant. Je croyais que nous leur donnions du fil à retorde, ils ont tenu le coup et nous avons eu des chances; voilà que nous nous sommes retrouvés à égalité avec le marteau au 10e bout; c'est là que nous être. Craig a réussi deux bons tirs sur les gardes au 10e.

"Ils ont réussi de bons coups aussi et nous ne les avons battus par pas grand-chose. Mais nous sommes entièrement satisfaits. Tu ne peux pas gagner si tu ne te rends pas à la finale, alors je me sens très bien."

Jacobs a réussi une double sortie au 1er bout qu'il a blanchi et a donné deux points au 2e même avec un autre double.

Mais Howard a raté son coup au 3e, puis a tenté une double sortie serrée, mais sa pierre a frôlé une garde; Jacobs a effectué un placement bon pour trois points au 3e bout.

Howard a presque réussi un gel sur une pierre adverse au 4e bout, mais Jacobs a délogé cette pierre. Howard faisait face à trois pierres adverses quand il a effectué un placement qui ne s'est pas tout à fait rendu et a marqué un point.

Avec une avance de 4-2, Jacobs a réussi un autre double au 5e bout et Howard avait à lancer pour deux points, mais le capitaine de l'Ontario a raté se contentant d'un seul point.

"C'est étrange avec un gars comme Glenn Howard," a déclaré Hart plus tard. "Quand vous pensez qu'il a de la difficulté s'il rate deux ou trois lancers, c'est comme si le ciel nous tombait sur la tête. Ça lui arrive une fois de temps en temps, mais il est rare que nous soyons punis."

Howard semblait pouvoir profiter de plusieurs points au 6e bout, mais Jacobs a effectué un bon lancer avec sa dernière pierre pour sauver le bout et prendre l'avance à 5-3.

Puis, ce fut le tournant du match.

"C'était au 7e bout," a dit Jacobs. "Quand ma pierre a glissé hors-jeu sur un franc tir, il a pu profiter d'un bout blanc.

Puis, il a bien placé ses pierres au 8e bout et nous avons eu de la difficulté. Si j'avais réussi mon coup au 7e et l'avais forcé à prendre un point, la fin de match aurait été différente."

E.J. Harnden et Jacobs ont raté leurs lancers au 8e bout et Howard avait trois pierres en jeu. Jacobs avait besoin que sa pierre glisse au bon endroit, mais ne fut pas le cas et son adversaire avait un franc tir pour marquer plusieurs points.

"Nous l'avons laissé aller," a dit Jacobs. "Nous n'avons pas joué comme nous le voulions, pas aussi bien que nous l'avons fait dans nos derniers six ou sept matchs. C'est pourquoi nous voulions nous rendre au match 1 vs 2 afin d'avoir une deuxième chance contre lui.

"Vous le voyer rater ses coups au début et vous ne pouvez vous empêcher de penser que peut-être vous avez des chances de battre ce gars-là s'il est dans une mauvaise passe. Mais, nous lui avons tout redonné. C'était un peu malheureux, mais c'est ce qui arrive au jeu quelques fois.

"Je crois que j'ai bien joué, mais j'ai raté quelques lancers importants; lorsque vous faites ça contre Glenn Howard, n'espérez pas remporter le match.

L'Ontario a battu ses adversaires à tous les postes, 89 à 81%.

Le Nord de l'Ontario avec un dossier de 9-3 attendra le gagnant du match sans  aucun lendemain de samedi à midi entre l'Alberta et Terre-Neuve et Labrador qu'il affrontera en demi-finale, ce soir à 19h30.

"Nous nous retrouverons sur la même piste," a dit Jacobs. "Ce fut une bonne expérience et nous savons à quoi nous attendre maintenant. Nous allons oublier ce match-là et nous préparer pour le prochain."

Jacobs a mentionné que c'était la troisième défaite de son équipe dans un match Page 1 vs 2.

"Nous avons perdu dans le championnat provincial, cette année et une fois auparavant, mais nous avons rebondi à chaque fois pour pouvoir participer au Brier. Je pense que nous pouvons des leçons de cela.  L'élan engendré en jouant dans la demi-finale peut parfois vous donner l'adrénaline nécessaire pour la finale."
