HALIFAX, March 10, 2010 - Alberta's Kevin Koe of Edmonton and Newfoundland/Labrador's Brad Gushue of St. John's moved into enviable positions behind idle runaway leader Ontario during Wednesday's Draw 13 at the Tim Hortons Brier, presented by Monsanto.

Alberta and the boys from The Rock are 7-and-2 with two games apiece to play while Ontario's Glenn Howard is 8-and-0, Northern Ontario's Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie is 6-and-2 and Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton is 5-and-3, along with Serge Reid of Jonquière, Quebec.

Stoughton bowed 5-3 to Gushue in the afternoon, the former Olympic gold-medal winner rebounding from a 9-5 morning thumping administered by Howard.

Koe, meanwhile, doubled up on James Grattan (2-and-6) of New Brunswick 6-3.

"A couple more key wins is nice on the old nerves," said Koe.  "We got one and then he had a pretty routine draw and we stole two and they sagged after that. They've had a bit of a rough week and it's tough for them to keep their spirits up. After that, we're playing pretty well."

Gushue allowed as how he thinks his team can still use some polishing.

"I still don't think we're playing really well as a team," he said. "We made some good shots at the right times and I thought Mark (Nichols) made some big shots again. We just have to get rocks set up a little bit better early. We're not getting the rocks set and we need those circus shots of Mark's to stay in games. That was the only reason we were in the game (against Ontario) this morning."

Gushue said the Manitoba front end struggled "and helped us out".

Stoughton agreed.  "We're not going anywhere playing like that," he moaned. "We're not putting any rocks in play. I haven't had a shot for two in a while. I'm looking at drawing the corner of the button, that sort of thing. So it's disappointing. The potential's there, they just have to execute, make it a little easier on the skipper."

Gushue said a little help from enemies today would benefit his team in the race to join Ontario in the Page One-Two playoff gamethat affords its participants an extra playoff life.

"I think a little help from Glenn now (Ontario plays Alberta on Thursday night) and a couple more wins will put us in pretty good shape," Gushue said.

Jacobs and his Northern Ontario team remained in the thick of it with a 7-2 throttling on Nova Scotia's Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc.

"I'm not surprised by the way we're playing," said Jacobs. "We've been getting better and better throughout this playoff process. We came in here feeling virtually no pressure. That's all on the guys who are expected to perform well."

In other action, British Columbia (3-and-6), skipped by Jeff Richard of Kelowna, took out some of its frustration with a 10-4 whipping of Jamie Koe's lowly Territories outfit (1-and-7).

Playing on today's 14th draw at 7:30 p.m. ET, Manitoba comes back to play undefeated Ontario in a critical collision — the two teams faced off in last year's semi-final with Manitoba the victor, Northern Ontario goes against P.E.I., Saskatchewan tackles the Territories and New Brunswick plays Quebec.

L'Alberta, Terre-Neuve et Labrador se rapprochent des éliminatoires et de l'Ontario
 
HALIFAX, le 10 mars 2010 – L'Albertain Kevin Koe d'Edmonton et le Terre-Neuvien Brad Gushue de St. John's se sont mis dans des positions enviables derrière le meneur de l'Ontario lors de la ronde 13 de mercredi au Brier Tim Hortons Brier présenté par Monsanto.

L'Alberta et les gars du Rock sont à 7-2 avec deux matchs chacun à jouer tandis que l'Ontarien Glenn Howard est à 8-0, Brad Jacobs de Sault Ste. Marie est à 6-2 et Jeff Stoughton est à 5-3 ainsi que Serge Reid du Québec.

Stoughton s'est incliné, 5-3 devant Gushue durant l'après-midi; l'ancien médaillé d'or olympique a rebondi après une défaite de 9-5 aux mains de Howard, le matin.

Koe, entre-temps, a défait James Grattan (2-6) du Nouveau-Brunswick, 6-3.

"Une couple de gains importants calment les vieux nerfs," a dit Koe.
"Nous avons marqué un point et nous en avons volé deux et ils ont eu de difficulté après cela. Ils ont une semaine assez dure et ce n'est pas facile de garder le moral. Nous avons bien joué."

Gushue a dit comment il pense que son équipe peut se raffiner.

"Je crois encore que nous ne jouons assez bien en équipe," a-t-il. "Nous avons réussi de bons coups au bon moment et je crois que Mark Nichols en a réussi des gros. Nous devons mettre les pierres aux bons endroits et nous ne faisons pas, c'est pourquoi nous avons besoin de lancers spectaculaires de la part de Mark pour demeurer dans le match. C'est la seule raison pour laquelle nous étions dans le match contre l'Ontario, ce matin."

Gushue a dit que les joueurs de tête du Manitoba avaient de la difficulté "et nous ont aidés".

Stoughton était d'accord. "Nous n'allons nulle part en jouant comme ça. Nous ne mettons pas les pierres en jeu. Je n'ai pas eu un lancer pour marquer deux points depuis assez longtemps. Je me retrouve avec un placement au coin du bouton, c'est le genre. C'est désappointant. Ils ont le potentiel, mais ils doivent bien exécuter leurs lancers et rendre la vie du capitaine un peu plus facile."

Gushue a avancé qu'un peu d'aide de la part des adversaires, aujourd'hui, sera bienvenu dans sa course pour joindre l'Ontario dans le match éliminatoire Page 1 vs 2 qui permet une deuxième chance aux participants.

"Je crois qu'un peu d'aide de Glenn maintenant (l'Ontario joue contre l'Alberta, jeudi soir) et deux autres victoires nous mettra en excellente position," a dit Gushue.

Jacobs et son équipe du Nord de l'Ontario demeure dans la course avec une victoire de 7-2 sur Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc de la Nouvelle-Écosse.

"Je ne suis pas surpris de notre façon de jouer," a avancé Jacobs. "Nous nous sommes améliorés tout au long du processus vers les éliminatoires. Nous nous sommes présentés ici sans sentir une trop grande pression. Elle existe surtout pour les joueurs sur qui les gens ont misé et qui doivent livrer la marchandise."

Dans un autre match, la Colombie-Britannique (3-6) dirigée par Jeff Richard de Kelowna, a fait passer sa frustration avec une victoire de 10-4 aux dépens de Jamie Koe des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (1-7).
