HALIFAX, March 7 - Another Brier, another fast Ontario start. Playing in his fifth straight Tim Hortons Brier, Glenn Howard and his team of Richard Hart, Brent Laing and Craig Savill of Coldwater stretched their record to 3-and-0 on Sunday at the Metro Centre.

Howard has a habit of getting off to fast starts at Briers. A year ago he was 8-and-0 before losing in the preliminary round robin. In 2008 he was 6-and-0. Ironically, the year he won it all (2007), Howard was beaten after piling up four straight wins.  In 2006, he won six before losing.

"It's where we want to be, obviously," Howard was saying Sunday. "But we're still not quite comfortable with the conditions, we still have some work to do."

Howard drew the four-foot cold with his last rock to vanquish Kelowna's Jeff Richard 7-6 on Sunday afternoon to extend the record.

On the nightshift, meanwhile, Alberta's Kevin Koe kept pace with his third win, a vital 7-6 decision against Brad Gushue of Newfoundland/Labrador.

The score probably flattered the Newfs. They appeared to be chasing throughout.

"It was a horrible game," offered Gushue. "I thought they outcurled us. We were hanging on right from the get-go. If Kevin makes a good one in the fourth end it's pretty well over early. It seemed like every shot I had was all or nothing and I made a lot of them and unfortunately missed one in the eighth end to give them three and that was the ball game there."

Gushue had twice forged his way in front after yielding a first-end deuce but he eschewed a risky corner-double tight to a guard in the eighth, missed a hit and roll off an outside rock instead and left Koe a draw to the four-foot for the three.

"We weren't getting the rocks in play early and we weren't getting the shots in there to get us out of trouble early enough," said Gushue. "We kept digging holes but we couldn't get out of that one in the eighth."

Koe, who flashed a hit to enable the Newfs the go-ahead theft of two in the fourth, agreed:

"The eighth was the turning point," he said. "That was definitely the key. Even when they stole the two I didn't panic because I thought we were dominating them. Even on the two ends they stole we had them in piles of trouble and Brad made great shots. I went aggressive on that one shot and missed it but the way we were playing I wasn't too worried."

He added: "The longer you go without losses the better off you are."

Alberta goes right back at it Monday morning against Richard (1-and-2). The B.C. skip broke into the win column Sunday night with a 9-5 decision over winless Nova Scotia.

"We knew we played well enough against Manitoba and Ontario in the first two games," said Richard, who lost on last rock in both. "And our confidence remained high. But we didn't want to go into tomorrow with a shutout threatening us."

Howard said he's been happy with his performance since winning the Ford Hot Shots on Saturday.

"From a personal perspective it was a great way to start," he said. "You make a lot of shots out there and that gives you some momentum and helps you catch on to the ice. And Tim Yeo's ice seems fantastic right now."

Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton won his third on the late draw, kayoing James Grattan of New Brunswick, who won his first two, then lost twice on Day Two.

"We're getting on to the conditions," said the Manitoba skip, who moved to 3-and-1 with an 8-4 win and has a one-day assignment Monday— against Quebec.

"The ice could be a little faster but we'll see what they can do. There's lots of curl and the rocks are running like you'd expect them to run."

Gushue is snarled with Quebec and Saskatchewan at 2-and-1. New Brunswick and Northern Ontario's Brad Jacobs are 2-and-2.  Jacobs throttled Jamie Koe's winless Territories team 9-5 in another late match.

Earlier, Serge Reid Quebec scored a last-end deuce to beat Nova Scotia 8-7 in the afternoon while Gushue clobbered Darrell McKee of Saskatchewan 11-5 and Koe thumped Rod MacDonald's Prince Edward Islanders 9-4.

In the morning, Howard defeated Jacobs 9-4, Stoughton trumped MacDonald 9-4, Reid beat the Polars 7-3 and Saskatchewan won its second, 7-4 over Grattan with three in the 10th end.

The Alberta win over Newfoundland was the province's fifth in sixth games against Gushue, whose only Brier conquest of Alberta was an 8-6 win over Kevin Martin in 2007.

Koe said he wasn't concerned about such winning records.  "I'm more concerned about the record at the end of the week."

Gushue tossed plaudits in directions of the Koe team afterward. "They're a good team," he said. "There's not much difference between them and Martin's team. Martin is the best in the world right now but those guys (the Koe team) aren't that far behind. If you don't play well against them, you see what happens."

In another Monday morning test, Newfoundland/Labrador takes on the Bluenosers.

Howard et Koe toujours invaincus au Brier Tim Hortons

Participant à son cinquième Brier Tim Hortons de suite, Glenn Howard et son quatuor Richard Hart, Brent Laing et Craig Savill de Coldwater présentent un dossier de 3-0, dimanche, au Metro Centre.

Howard a l'habitude de bien commencer au Brier.  Il y a un an, il affichait un dossier de 8-0 avant de perdre dans les rondes préliminaires. En 2008, il était à 6-0. Ironiquement, l'année qu'il a tout remporté (2007), Howard a été battu après avoir accumulé quatre victoires de suite.  En 2006, il en a gagné six avant de perdre.

"C'est l'endroit où nous désirons être, c'est évident," a dit Howard, dimanche. "Mais, nous ne sommes pas encore confortables avec la glace, nous avons encore du travail à faire."

Howard a effectuer un placement dans le cercle de quatre pieds avec sa dernière pierre pour l'emporter sur Jeff Richard de Kelowna, 7-6, dimanche après-midi.

Dans la soirée, entre-temps, l'Albertain Kevin Koe a gardé la cadence avec son troisième gain, 7-6 contre Brad Gushue de Terre-Neuve et Labrador.

Le pointage a probablement plu aux Newfs. Ils avaient l'air de courir partout.

"Ce fut un très mauvais match," a avancé Gushue. "Je crois qu'ils ont été supérieurs à nous et dès le début. Si Kevin réussit son coup au 4e bout, c'est une fin imminente. Il me semble que tous mes lancers étaient critiques et j'en ai réussi plusieurs, mais malheureusement, j'en ai raté un au 8e bout et ils ont marqué trois points; la partie était jouée."

Gushue avait réussi à se faufiler en tête après avoir donné deux points au 1er bout, mais il a évité une garde au 8e, a raté le coup et a roulé en dehors; Koe a réussi son placement dans le cercle de quatre pieds et a marqué trois points.

"Nous ne mettions pas les pierres en jeu assez tôt et nous ne les mettions pas au bon endroit pour nous sortir de nos problèmes assez vite," a dit Gushue. "Nous nous enlisions, mais nous ne pouvions pas nous en sortir au 8e bout."

Koe qui a manqué un lancer et aidé les Newfs à voler deux points au 4e bout, était d'accord:

"Le 8e bout a été le tournant," a-t-il dit. "C'est réellement la clé. Même quand ils en ont volé deux, je n'ai pas paniqué parce que je pensais que nous les dominions. Nous les avions dans les câbles et Brad a réussi des coups superbes. J'ai joué agressivement avec ce lancer et j'ai raté, mais je n'étais pas inquiet vu la façon dont nous jouions."

Il a ajouté: "Plus vous avancez sans subir la défaite, mieux vous vous sentez."

Alberta se remet à la tâche, lundi matin, contre Richard (1-2).  Le capitaine de la Colombie-Britannique est apparu dans la colonne des gains, dimanche soir, avec une victoire de 9-5 aux dépens de la Nouvelle-Écosse.

"Nous savions que nous avions bien joué contre le Manitoba et l'Ontario lors des premiers matchs," a dit Richard qui avait perdu sur la dernière pierre dans les deux matchs. "Et notre confiance est demeurée assez élevée. Mais, nous ne voulions pas entreprendre la tâche du lendemain avec un dossier nul."

Howard a mentionné qu'il était satisfait de sa performance depuis sa victoire aux Ford Hot Shots, samedi.

"D'un point de vue personnel, c'était une bonne façon de commencer. Vous réussissez plusieurs lancers et ça vous donne l'élan et vous aide à maîtriser la glace. La glace de Tim Yeo me semble très bien pour le moment."
Le Manitobain Jeff Stoughton a remporté son troisième match dans la soirée en battant James Grattan du Nouveau-Brunswick qui avait gagné ses deux premiers et perdu les deux suivants.

"Nous commençons à maîtriser la glace," a déclaré le capitaine manitobain qui affiche un dossier de 3-1 après une victoire de 8-4 et a un seul match, lundi, contre Québec.

"La glace est un peu plus rapide, mais nous verrons ce qu'ils peuvent faire. Les pierres courbent bien et se comportent comme tu l'espères."

Gushue est à égalité avec Québec et la Saskatchewan à 2-1. Le Nouveau-Brunswick et le Nord de l'Ontario sont à 2-2.  Jacobs  a battu Jamie Koe des Territoires du Nord-Ouest, 9-5.

Plus tôt, Serge Reid du Québec a marqué deux points au dernier bout pour vaincre la Nouvelle-Écosse, 8-7 en après-midi tandis que Gushue a massacré Darrell McKee de la Saskatchewan, 11-5 et Koe a défait Rod MacDonald de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, 9-4.

Le matin, Howard a vaincu Jacobs, 9-4, Stoughton a battu MacDonald, 9-4, Reid a eu le meilleur sur les Polars, 7-3 et la Saskatchewan a remporté sa deuxième victoire par la marque de 7-4 sur Grattan avec trois points au 10e bout.

La victoire de l'Alberta sur Terre-Neuve et Labrador marquait la cinquième rencontre sur six de la province contre Gushue; sa seule victoire sur l'Alberta au Brier a été de 8-6 aux dépens de Kevin Martin en 2007.

Koe a déclaré que de telles statistiques ne le dérangeaient pas

"Je suis plutôt intéressé par les statistiques à la fin de la semaine."

Gushue a envoyé des fleurs dans la direction de l'équipe de Koe après le match. "Ils forment une bonne équipe. Il n'y a pas beaucoup de différence entre eux et l'équipe de Martin. Martin est le meilleur dans le monde maintenant, mais l'équipe de Koe n'est pas loin derrière. Si vous ne jouez pas bien contre eux, vous verrez ce qui arrivera."

Dans un autre test de lundi matin, Terre-Neuve et Labrador rencontre les Bluenosers.
