HALIFAX, March 7 - Ontario's Glenn Howard moved to the front of the Tim Hortons Brier pack at the Metro Centre on Sunday afternoon, concluding a sweep of its day's assignments with a tight 7-6 victory over Jeff Richard of British Columbia.

The less-experienced Kelowna team gave up deuces in the fourth and sixth ends and couldn't recover but still had Howard looking at a pair in the 10th end when he went down for his last shot, an open draw to the four-foot ring. 

Howard executed the shot perfectly to extend Ontario's record to 3-and-0.
Brad Gushue's St. John's team and Kevin Koe of Edmonton remained the only other unbeaten skips in the field — Gushue hammered Darrell McKee's Saskatchewan troops from Saskatoon by an 11-5 score while Koe and his Albertans dumped Rod MacDonald of P.E.I. 9-4.

Alberta and Newfoundland/Labrador collide in tonight's feature hookup at 7:30 p.m. ET.

In a late-finishing tilt, Serge Reid of Quebec scored two in the eighth and two in the 10th end without requiring the hammer to rally and upend hometown favourite Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc 8-7.

"That," said Howard of his B.C., opponent, "is a damn good team. You don't win any province playing lousy, and those guys are very good. They'll do some damage this week."

Richard said his team was happy to have drawn (a) Manitoba and (b) Ontario as opening adversaries.

"You want to play these guys early and find out where you stack up," said Richard. "I think losing two on last rock means we played them pretty tough. We're catching on to the ice but so are they. So they'll get better and we've played them. I think we're in good shape in spite of an 0-and-2 start."

In other action tonight, the Territories (0-3) plays Northern Ontario (1-2), New Brunswick (2-1) goes against Manitoba (2-1) and Nova Scotia (0-2) tackles British Columbia (0-2).

Trois équipes encore invaincues au Brier Tim Hortons

 HALIFAX, le 7 mars – L'Ontarien  Glenn Howard s'est faufilé en avant de toutes les équipes au Brier Tim Hortons au Metro Centre, dimanche après-midi, terminant ses travaux de la journée avec une victoire de 7-6 sur Jeff Richard de la Colombie-Britannique.

L'équipe de Kelowna avec moins d'expérience s'en est fait prendre deux au 4e bout ainsi qu'au 6e et elle n'a pas pu s'en remettre, mais Howard a dû faire face à deux au 10e bout avant d'effectuer un placement dans le cercle de quatre pieds. 

Howard a réussi le lancer à la perfection et a amélioré son dossier à 3-0.
Brad Gushue de St. John's et Kevin Koe d'Edmonton demeurent les seuls autres capitaines invaincus.  Gushue bien battu Darrell McKee de Saskatoon et son équipe de la Saskatchewan par la marque de 11-5 tandis que Koe et ses Albertains ont défait Rod MacDonald de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, 9-4.

L'Alberta et Terre-Neuve et Labrador s'affrontent dans la soirée à 19h30.

Dans une fin de match serrée, Serge Reid du Québec a marqué deux points au 8e bout et deux autres au 10e sans avoir eu recours à sa dernière pierre pour l'emporter aux dépens du favori de la place, Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc par la marque de 8-7.

"Cet adversaire," a dit Howard de la Colombie-Britannique, "est une très bonne formation. Vous ne battez aucune province en jouant pauvrement; ces gars-là sont très bons. Ils vont donner faire du grabuge, cette semaine."

Richard a mentionné que son équipe était heureuse d'avoir à affronter (a) le Manitoba et (b) l'Ontario au début du tournoi.

"Il est préférable de les rencontrer tôt et tenter de trouver où vous vous situez dans la liste," a dit Richard. "Je crois que perdre deux fois sur la dernière pierre veut dire que nous les avons tenus en halène. Nous apprivoisons la glace, mais eux aussi. Alors, ils vont s'améliorer et nous les avons déjà rencontrés. Je pense que nous sommes en bonne position même si nous avons un dossier de 0-2 en partant."

Dans les autres matchs, ce soir, les Territoires du Nord-Ouest 999999 (0-3) jouent contre le Nord de l'Ontario (1-2), le Nouveau-Brunswick (2-1) contre le Manitoba (2-1) et la Nouvelle-Écosse (0-2) contre la Colombie-Britannique (0-2).
