Switzerland, Norway prevail in Ford worlds tiebreakers
MONCTON, N.B. April 10, 2009 — Switzerland's Ralph Stoeckli and Thomas Ulsrud of Norway have nailed down the final two playoff berths at the 2009 Ford world men's curling championship at the Moncton Coliseum.
The Swiss and Norwegians both won tiebreaker matches on Friday afternoon and will meet in the Page playoff three vs. four game on Saturday at 9 a.m. (all times Eastern) on TSN.
Switzerland came back from an early 3-1 deficit by scoring three in the fourth end and three more in the seventh en route to an 8-7 win over Germany's Andy Kapp.
Norway, meanwhile, scored early and often in piling up a 10-2 win over John Shuster of the United States.
The Ford worlds playoffs kick off Friday at 6:30 p.m. on TSN with the Page one-two game between Canada's Kevin Martin (10-1) and Scotland's David Murdoch (8-3); the same teams met Thursday night with Scotland winning in an extra end.
Last year at Grand Forks, Murdoch beat Martin in the one-two game but lost to him in the gold-medal game.
The Scotland-Canada winner moves to Sunday's championship game, 6:30 p.m. on TSN, while the loser drops to the semifinal — 3 p.m. Saturday on TSN — against the Norway-Switzerland winner.
