Swiss hand Norway its first loss at Ford worlds

MONCTON, N.B. April 7, 2009 — Switzerland juggled its lineup and knocked Norway's Thomas Ulsrud from the ranks of the unbeaten Tuesday afternoon at the 2009 Ford world men's curling championship.

Skip Ralph Stoeckli handed off shot-calling duties to former world champ Markus Eggler in Draw 10 play at the Moncton Coliseum, and the shift paid off with a tight 3-2 win over Norway.

With the win, Stoeckli's team from the Basel-Regio Curling Club (third Jan Hauser, Eggler and lead Simon Strubin) improved to 3-4 in the 12-team round-robin standings, while Norway dropped to 5-1.

"I didn't feel comfortable putting the broom on the ice," said Stoeckli of the decision to put Eggler on the tee-head. "This gave me more focus on (making) my shots instead of troubling myself (with the shot-calling). And Markus has enough experience to do it. We finally played how we usually play curling. We couldn't pick up the percentages as a team until that game. It was kind of boring, but that was our goal, to make it a boring game."

In other action, Germany's Andy Kapp finished off a two-win day with an 8-4 win over Finland's Kalle Kiiskinen. After giving up a stolen single in the first end, the Germans, 4-3, took control by scoring two in the second end and stealing three in the third and one more in the fourth. The Finns dropped to 1-5 with the loss.

Scotland's David Murdoch, the 2008 silver-medallist, finished off a miserable day by losing 5-4 to Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic. The Scots had won four straight coming into Tuesday action but lost earlier in the day to China before suffering through the loss to the 2-4 Czechs.

In the other afternoon tilt, Denmark's Ulrik Schmidt took another step towards clinching a berth in the 2010 Winter Olympics with a 9-6 triumph over John Shuster of the United States. The Danes, 3-3 with the win, finished it off with a Johnny Frederiksen double takeout in the 10th end to hand the U.S. its third loss in seven games.

Canada's Kevin Martin (6-0), France's Thomas Dufour (3-3), Japan's Yusuke Morozumi (2-4) and China's Fengchun Wang (1-5) had byes in Draw 10.

Norway's Thomas Ulsrud (5-0), Denmark's Ulrik Schmidt (2-3), Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic (1-4) and Kalle Kiiskinen of Finland (1-4) also had byes in Draw 9.
Tuesday's action concludes with the 6:30 p.m. (all times Eastern) draw on TSN; curltv.com also has coverage.

On Wednesday, draws are scheduled for 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30; TSN will show the Canadian games, at 9 a.m. against Finland and 2 p.m. against the U.S., while curltv.com also will have live coverage.

The top four teams following the conclusion of round-robin play on Thursday night will make the Page playoffs. The first- and second-place teams will play Friday at 6:30 p.m. or Saturday at 9 a.m., depending on potential tiebreakers, with the winner going into Sunday's 6:30 p.m. championship game on TSN.

The third- and fourth-place teams will play Friday or Saturday for a berth in Saturday's 3 p.m. semifinal on TSN against the loser of the Page one-two game.
