Germans hit the win column at Ford worlds

MONCTON, N.B. April 5, 2009 — Germany's Andy Kapp picked up his first win of the 2009 Ford world men's curling championship Sunday morning at the Moncton Coliseum.

Kapp's German champs from Fussen — third Andreas Lang, second Holger Hoehne and lead Andreas Kempf — took an extra end to beat Switzerland's Ralph Stoeckli 10-9 in Draw 3 play on Sunday morning. Both teams now have 1-1 records.

Germany led most of the way before giving up four in the ninth end, but rallied for a game-tying deuce in the 10th, then stole the winning point when Stoeckli's last-rock hack-weight takeout attempt failed to curl enough.

"It was a weird game," said Kapp, who's competing in his 12th world men's championship. "We were in control in the beginning and then we lost control. The four was just bad shooting from the boys. But the win was important. If you're 0-and-2, you get a bad feeling. But now we have the win and nobody can take it away from you. It's better for lunch-time."

Also, Scotland's David Murdoch racked up a 12-6 win over John Shuster of the U.S., a result that left both teams with 1-1 records. The Scots and Americans traded four-enders in the second and third ends, and were tied 6-6 through seven ends before the Scots put six on the board in the eighth prompting handshakes.

Norway's Thomas Ulsrud (2-0), Canada's Kevin Martin (1-0), France's Thomas Dufour (1-0), Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic (1-1), Kalle Kiiskinen of Finland (1-1), Fengchun Wang of China (0-1), Yusuke Morozumi of Japan (0-1) and Denmark's Ulrik Schmidt (0-2) all had byes in Draw 3.

Play at the Ford Worlds continues Sunday with draws at noon and 6:30 p.m. (all times Eastern). TSN is televising the Canadian games (noon and 6:30), while coverage also is available at curltv.com.
