IQALUIT, Nunavut, November 10….There was no change on the leaderboard at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship after Draw 6, Monday afternoon at Arniatok Arena.
Saskatchewan, skipped by Darrell McKee, maintained its unblemished record, now a perfect 5-0, with a hard-fought 7-5 win over Nova Scotia (Mark Dacey of Halifax), taking two in the 10th for the victory. Dacey, the 2004 Brier champion, is trying to win his second Mixed title, after capturing the 2002 edition in Halifax.
McKee, who played third for Bruce Korte at the 2000 Labatt Brier in Saskatoon, thus maintained his margin over Manitoba, skipped by Sean Grassie of Winnipeg, the only other undefeated team, which moved to 4-0 with a 12-3 dismantling of the Territories (George Lennie of Inuvik).
In other games, Ontario (Wayne Tuck of Brantford) whipped Newfoundland and Labrador (Andrew Mercer of St. John’s), 9-3 to improve to 3-1, tied with Northern Ontario (Ian Fisher of Sault Ste. Marie), while Prince Edward Island (Bill Hope of Charlottetown) won its first game, 5-3 over winless Alberta (Tom Appelman of Edmonton).
Play resumes with Draw 7 tonight at 7:00 pm ET. The 12-team round robin continues with draws at 10:00 am, 2:30 pm and 7:00 pm through Thursday, with a final draw at 10:00 am on Friday.
Upon completion of the round robin, the first place team will advance directly to the final on Saturday, November 15, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final to determine the other finalist.
Alberta has won a leading nine Mixed titles since the championship began in 1964 in Toronto, including last season, when Dean Ross of Calgary defeated Ontario’s Bob Turcotte in the final.
This 46th edition of the Canadian Mixed, which is being presented by First Air, is the first time that a Canadian sport championship has been contested in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
