Ontario women climb to top at M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors

SALMON ARM, BC, February 4...Ontario, skipped by Rachel Homan of Ottawa, has climbed to the top of the women's standings at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, taking place at the Sunwave Centre and Salmon Arm Curling Club.

Ontario Skip, Rachel Homan delivering her last rock at the 2009 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Salmon Arm, BC.
Wednesday morning, Ontario defeated Nova Scotia (Marie Christianson of Halifax), 8-1 to move to 6-1 after Draw 10, now alone in first and one game up on Alberta and Manitoba, who are parked in second with 5-2 records.

Big things are expected in the curling world from the 19-year-old Homan, who won a gold medal at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse and has also enjoyed success on the women's tour, having beaten 2008 Ford worlds runner-up, China's Bingyu Wang, in one spiel and veteran Sherry Middaugh in another, results good enough to place her 10th on the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS).

Meanwhile, Manitoba, skipped by Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes, had to steal three in the ninth end to put away a stubborn Northwest Territories team, still skipped by local substitute Jennifer Gerow, who has replaced an injured Kate Maksymowich, by a 9-6 tally.

Lawes won the Canadian title last year in Sault Ste. Marie, then earned a bronze medal at the world juniors in Östersund, Sweden, along with her third, Jenna Loder.  However, she has a new front end this year in Laryssa Grenkow and Breanne Meakin, both finalists at the 2007 Canadian juniors, with skip Calleen Neufeld.

Alberta, skipped by Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge, suffered a surprising 6-5 defeat in an extra end to Yukon (Sarah Koltun of Whitehorse), to fall out of a tie for first.  Yukon improved to 2-5.

In the other game, host British Columbia (Kelly Shimizu of Richmond) was a 6-4 winner over Newfoundland and Labrador (Erin Porter of St. John's) to move to 4-3, its fourth win in the last five games after starting off 0-2.

In men's, the undefeated leader Northern Ontario (Dylan Johnston of Thunder Bay), at 6-0, had a morning bye, as did second place New Brunswick (Steve Burgess of Fredericton), at 5-1.

Alberta (Kevin Yablonski of Calgary) upped its record to 5-2 with an 8-6 decision over Yukon (Thomas Scoffin of Whitehorse), while British Columbia (Bryan Kedziora of Maple Ridge) won its fifth straight, 11-3 over Newfoundland and Labrador (Kelly Schuh of St. John's) to also improve to 5-2, after a rocky start.

The other games saw Ontario (Bowie Abbis-Mills of Waterloo) defeat Nova Scotia (Paul Dexter of St. Andrews), 8-5 to move to 3-4, tied with Manitoba (Sam Good of Winnipeg), which flattened Northwest Territories (Colin Miller of Yellowknife), 11-1.

Round robin play continues this afternoon with draws at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
