Ontario, Alberta Atop Standings Heading into Day 3
CALGARY, March 8, 2009 -- Ontario's Glenn Howard and Alberta's Kevin Martin head into Day 3 here at the Tim Hortons Brier exactly where everyone expected them to be -- atop the standings.
Ontario and Alberta remain the only undefeated teams in the 12-team Brier field following victories here on the Sunday evening draw. Ontario's Howard defeated BC's Sean Geall 7-4, while Alberta's Martin drilled Saskatchewan's Joel Jordison 11-3. The wins improved Ontario and Alberta to 3-0.
"We're 3-0 and you can't do much better than that," Howard said afterward. "And we're getting better, which is good."
Martin also left the Saddledome Sunday evening feeling good about his Alberta team's position. "Especially with who we played -- (New Brunswick's) Russ (Howard), Quebec and Saskatchewan, that's a tough three games. So it's good, it's perfect.
"And we're curling pretty good. I think we're getting high percentages, which is really great."
In other games Sunday evening, Newfoundland's Brad Gushue improved to 2-1 with an 8-5 win over Northern Ontario's Mike Jakubo and Quebec's Jean-Michel Menard improved to 2-1 with a 10-3 win over New Brunswick's Howard.
Northern Ontario and Saskatchewan head into Day 3 as the only teams still winless, tied for last at 0-3.
The Jordison team are making their rookie appearance at a Brier, but are a proven commodity on the cashspiel circuit. It bears noting that Saskatchewan's Stefanie Lawton also opened at 0-3 at the recent Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Victoria, only to rattle off six straight victories and finish at 7-4, qualifying her team for the 3 vs 4 game before falling to eventual champion, Manitoba's Jennifer Jones.
