VERNON, B.C. -- Canada's Jennifer Jones improved her record to 2-0 here at the Ford World Womens Curling Championship Sunday afternoon, dropping Czech Republic's Katerina Urbanova 11-4.
Jones scored three in the second end, stole two in the third end and then drew paint for a six-spot in the fifth end to take a commanding 11-3 lead into the fifth end break against a young Czech squad who looked over-matched.
The two teams shook hands after the sixth end and Urbanova sounded relieved afterwards to have the experience behind her. "We knew it would be difficult. We knew we had to risk against a team like that.
"So we risked, but we didn't play so well."
Canada second Jill Officer said she empathized with the plight of an opponent that is learning the game on the fly. "They're getting all their experience in front of the world, whereas I was 12 and curling at the local curling club."
Canada comes right back out on the ice Sunday evening to play Germany's Andrea Schoepp.
Schoepp lost a thriller over Switzerland's Mirjam Ott Sunday afternoon, scoring three in the tenth end to tie the game only to see it slip away in the extra end when Ott made a triple takeout with the last shot of the game to score one and win 12-11.
To add insult to injury, Schoepp had just 40 minutes to recover from the loss and get back out on the ice against Canada, thanks to the extra end and an abbreviated break between the afternoon and evening draws that had been built into the schedule.
In other games Sunday afternoon, USA's Debbie McCormick squeaked out a 6-5 win over Italy's Diana Gaspari and Japan's Moe Meguro downed Denmark's Angelina Jensen 8-6.
Heading into Sunday evening, Canada and China are the only undefeated teams remaining, tied for first at 2-0. Denmark, Japan and USA are tied for third at 2-1.
In other games scheduled for Sunday evening, Russia plays Sweden, Czech Republic plays Switzerland and Scotland plays China.
