CALGARY, November 13…Alberta continues to roll at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, taking place at the Calgary Curling Club.
Skipped by Dean Ross of Calgary, Alberta remained unbeaten through seven draws with a 9-6 win over Northern Ontario, in a battle of the top two teams. Ross broke the game open with a three-spot in the seventh end to take a commanding 8-5 lead. The teams traded singles in the next two ends before Northern Ontario, skipped by Mike Assad of Thunder Bay, ran out of rocks in the 10th.
Thus, Alberta is now 7-0 and holds a two-game edge over Northern Ontario, which fell to 5-2 with the loss.
Ontario, skipped by three-time Canadian Seniors champion Bob Turcotte of Toronto, climbed back into a tie for second with Northern Ontario, dusting off Saskatchewan, 8-4.
In other Draw 7 games, Nova Scotia defeated Manitoba, 7-3; Quebec whipped Newfoundland and Labrador, 8-3; British Columbia got back on the winning track with a 10-3 pasting of New Brunswick while Yukon/Northwest Territories, skipped by Wade Scoffin of Whitehorse, put a halt to Prince Edward Island’s three-game winning streak, defeating the Islanders, 12-10.
The results left Nova Scotia, skipped by Peter Burgess of Truro, and Quebec, skipped by Simon Dupuis of Thurso, deadlocked for fourth with 4-3 marks.
Draw 8 is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm MT/8:00 pm ET.
Round robin play continues on Wednesday with draws at 12 Noon and 6:00 pm and concludes Thursday morning with a 9:00 am draw, followed by any required tiebreakers before the playoffs. The first place team will advance to Friday’s 1:00 pm MT/3:00 pm ET final, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final either Thursday evening or Friday morning.
Twelve teams, representing the 10 provinces plus separate entries for Northern Ontario and Yukon/Northwest Territories, are battling for the 2008 Canadian Mixed title, which has been won by Alberta and Saskatchewan a leading eight times each since the championship began in 1964 in Toronto.
Two members of the winning team will also compete in the inaugural 2008 World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15 in Vierumäki, Finland. The team members will decide who will represent Canada at the event.
