CALGARY, November 12…So far, so good, at least as far as the host province Alberta is concerned, at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, being played at the Calgary Curling Club.
On Monday night, Alberta, skipped by Dean Ross of Calgary, eked out a 4-3 victory over Saskatchewan, taking one in the 10th end to remain unbeaten at 6-0.
In spite of perfection after three days at the Canadian championship, Alberta remains just a game ahead of Northern Ontario, skipped by Mike Assad of Thunder Bay. Northern Ontario kept pace by defeating Newfoundland and Labrador, 7-3 to push its record to 5-1.
Ontario, skipped by Bob Turcotte of Toronto, is now at 4-2 after dropping a 9-5 decision to red-hot Kyle Stevenson’s Prince Edward Island foursome, who has now won three games in a row.
In other Draw 6 games, Quebec defeated New Brunswick, 8-6 in an extra end; Manitoba prevailed over British Columbia, 7-5 and Nova Scotia edged Yukon/NWT, taking one in the 12th end, that’s right, the 12th end, for an 8-7 victory.
Thus, six teams are now knotted at 3-3: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.
Three teams remain at the bottom of the standings, all with 1-5 marks…. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Yukon/NWT.
Round robin play continues with two-a-day draws at 12 Noon and 6:00 pm local time on Tuesday and Wednesday. The round robin concludes on Thursday morning with a 9:00 am draw, followed by any required tiebreakers before the playoffs. The first place team will advance to Friday’s 1:00 pm MT/3:00 pm ET final, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final either Thursday evening or Friday morning.
Twelve teams, representing the 10 provinces plus separate entries for Northern Ontario and Yukon/Northwest Territories, are battling for the 2008 Canadian Mixed title, which has been won by Alberta and Saskatchewan a leading eight times each since the championship began in 1964 in Toronto.
Two members of the winning team will also compete in the inaugural 2008 World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15 in Vierumäki, Finland. The team members will decide who will represent Canada at the event.
