CALGARY, November 11…Alberta, skipped by Calgary’s Dean Ross, is now the only undefeated team after three draws of the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.
Sunday afternoon, the host province kept its unblemished record intact, defeating Quebec 7-3 to move to 3-0 and alone in first place.
Previously unbeaten Northern Ontario, skipped by Mike Assad of Thunder Bay, bowed to Ontario’s Bob Turcotte of Toronto, 7-2 to fall into a five-way tie for second, all with 2-1 marks.
Joining Northern Ontario and Ontario are Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Manitoba, skipped by Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg, beat winless Prince Edward Island, 9-3. Nova Scotia’s Peter Burgess of Truro edged British Columbia, 7-6 in an extra end while Newfoundland and Labrador, skipped by Brian Bailey of Corner Brook, also won in an extra end, 8-7 over New Brunswick.
In the other game, Saskatchewan, skipped by Ian Mayoh of Debden, won its first by a 6-3 margin over Yukon/Northwest Territories.
Round robin play continues with Draw 4 at 6:00 pm MT/8:00 pm ET at the Calgary Curling Club.
Twelve teams, representing the 10 provinces plus separate entries for Northern Ontario and Yukon/Northwest Territories, are battling this week for the 2008 Canadian Mixed title, which has been won by Alberta and Saskatchewan a leading eight times each since 1964.
The round robin concludes on Thursday morning, followed by any required tiebreakers before the playoffs. The first place team will advance to Friday afternoon’s final, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final.
Two members of the winning team will also compete in the inaugural 2008 World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15 in Vierumäki, Finland. The team members will decide who will represent Canada at the event.
