CALGARY, November 6, 2007…The 45th edition of the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gets underway this Saturday at the Calgary Curling Club.
Twelve teams, representing the 10 provinces plus Northern Ontario and Yukon/Northwest Territories, will compete in the round robin, after which the first place team advances directly to the final on Friday, November 16, while the second and third place teams meet in a semi-final to determine the other finalist.
In addition to winning the Canadian championship, two players from the winning team will also represent Canada at the inaugural World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15, 2008 in Vierumäki, Finland.
This is the first time that Calgary has hosted the Mixed, which began in 1964 in Toronto. However, the Calgary Curling Club has staged two other Canadian championships in recent years, the 2001 Canadian Seniors and 1998 Canadian Juniors. And, of course, the city successfully hosted the 1997 and 2002 Canadian men’s curling championships and will stage the Tim Hortons Brier, once again, in 2009.
Among the competing skips are British Columbia’s Bryan Miki, who won the 2000 Canadian and Ford world men’s curling championship as second for Greg McAulay; Ontario’s Bob Turcotte, a three-time (1996, 1997 and 2000) Canadian Senior champion, former provincial junior champions Reid Carruthers of Manitoba and Prince Edward Island’s Kyle Stevenson and Northern Ontario’s Mike Assad, who has previously competed in a Canadian Juniors, Brier and Canadian Mixed.
Alberta and Saskatchewan lead all provinces with eight Mixed titles each. Alberta’s last win came in 2004 in Schumacher, Ontario by Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink, who also became the first female skip to win the Canadian championship.
Last year in Kitchener, the Mixed was captured by New Brunswick’s Terry Odishaw. The last time the Mixed was held in Alberta was in 2000 in Lethbridge, when it was won by the host province’s Kevin Koe. Alberta third Susan O’Connor was also a member of that championship team.
Draw results will be available immediately at www.curling.ca or www.seasonofchampions.ca. CurlTV (curltv.com) will also be providing daily coverage to its subscribers.
