Silent Auction for Calgary Wheelchair Curlers

The 2008 Canadian Mixed Host Committee is operating a Silent Auction throughout the week. The funds raised will go towards Calgary Wheelchair Curlers that will assist with the purchase of equipment and ice time, and will give those individuals with disabilities, the opportunity to enjoy the sport of curling.

About Wheelchair Curling and the Calgary Wheelchair Curling League

Canadian wheelchair curling began in Ontario in 2001 when a team was created to compete for Canada at the World championships. Annual Canadian championships began in 2003 with teams competing from B.C., Manitoba and Ontario. A pool of curlers from that event was formed to compete internationally as Team Canada.

The first Alberta wheelchair curling club was formed in Edmonton. Shortly after Ernie Comerford, Alberta Curling Federation Course Conductor, became the Coordinator for wheelchair curling in Calgary and organized a clinic at the Ogden Legion curling rink in 2004. Ice was made available every week-end at the Legion and the popularity of the sport increased. By the end of the second season in 2005, the skill levels of some of the players had advanced and Ernie prepared a team to compete at the national level.

In the spring of 2006, the Calgary Wheelchair Curling League attended a Canadian Curling Federation sanctioned first annual Alberta Provincial Championship. The Calgary team skipped by Bruno Yizek was declared the provincial champion; they attended the Canadian championships as the first Team Alberta and won 3rd place. The second annual Alberta Championship was held at the Garrison Club in Calgary with 2 Edmonton teams and 2 Calgary teams competing. The Yizek team again prevailed as Provincial Champions, and later won the Silver medal at the National Championships that were held in Ottawa.

The Calgary Wheelchair Curling League is the largest group in the country and expects to host a Canadian Championship event in Calgary. The Ogden Legion is their home club, providing a sports and social activity for a large group of disabled Calgarians. Their competitive curlers are determined to win a Canadian Championship.
