The low-scoring final at the John Shea Insurance Canada Cup final spotlighted how well the finalists from Western Canada can throw heat.
Calgary's Kevin Koe with Blake MacDonald, Carter Rycroft and Nolan Thiessen powered their way to a 5-3 victory Sunday night over Manitoba's foursome of Mike McEwan, Matt Wozniak, B.J. Neufeld and Denni Neufeld.
On straight but fast ice, both teams cleared rocks to blank the first five ends. Manitoba led 3-2 going into the 10th end, but Koe won on his final brick by throwing a slash to clear a couple Manitoba rocks and score three.
The final prize money of $12,500 went to Team Koe with McEwan receiving $9.500.
McEwan also secured a spot in February's Strauss Canada Cup in Kamloops, B.C., where an Olympic trials berth will be at stake. Koe already had a spot.
