February 11…Veteran Bob Ursel of Kelowna won the Canadian Direct Insurance British Columbia championship Sunday in Penticton by edging former world champion Greg McAulay, 8-7 in an extra end, a victory that required a measure for the win.

Ursel had finished the 10-team round robin in second place with a 6-3 mark, then defeated Kimberley’s Tom Buchy, the first place finisher, 8-2 in the Page 1 vs 2 game, to advance to the final.

Meanwhile, Richmond’s McAulay, the 2000 Brier and world champion, first defeated Deane Horning of Castlegar in the Page 3 vs 4 game, 8-1, before ousting Buchy, 7-3 in the semi-final.   It was another bitter loss for McAulay, who dropped a previous extra end provincial final to Dean Joanisse in 2007.

Ursel is joined by third Jim Cotter, second Kevin Folk, the 2000 Canadian and world junior champion, and lead Rick Sawatsky.

Ursel, the 1984 Canadian junior and 1985 world junior champion, will be making his third Brier appearance for British Columbia, after playing third for Pat Ryan in 2003 and Bert Gretzinger in 1999.

British Columbia has four Brier wins…that last by McAulay in 2000 in Saskatoon.
