Mixed Doubles Competition

Each side will be required to pick six Mixed Doubles teams with two members of each team selected. A Mixed Doubles team consists of two throwers (one man and one woman). Sweeping will only be provided in this competition by the two players on the ice for each team. Normal sweeping and throwing rules will apply.

Points

A total of six points will be awarded for each Mixed Doubles game won. In the case of a tie, each team will receive three points. Since six games are being played, a total of 36 points will be awarded.

Rules

  1. Scoring is counted as in normal curling.
  2. Each game will consist of eight ends. Ties will not be broken.
  3. Each team will be allocated 48 minutes per game.
  4. Each team throws five stones per end. The player delivering the first stone of each end must also deliver the last stone of the end for their team, while the player throwing the second stone must also deliver the third and fourth stones for their team. This rotation may change from end-to-end and is simply determined by the player who delivers the first stone for his/her side at the start of each end.
  5. No stone can be removed from play until after the third stone of each end and any stones it may have displaced have come to rest. If there is a violation, the played stone shall be removed from play and any misplaced stones shall be placed back as close as possible to where they originally lay by the non-offending team.
  6. Two stationary stones will be positioned by the officials at the start of each end.
    1. One stone will bisect the centre-line in front of the house (the exact position of this stone will be determined by the chief umpire prior to the start of the competition, dependent on ice conditions) while the other
    2. will be positioned at the back of the button so that it bisects the centre-line and touches the tee-line. The chief umpire will notify the two team captains prior to the start of the competition of the exact position of (a).
  7. Prior to the start of each end, one team will have an ‘option’. The team with the ‘option’ has its choice of having its stone placed as a guard or having the stone positioned in the house behind the button. If the guard is chosen, the opponent’s stone is positioned in the house or vice-versa.
  8. The team with the stone out front as a guard will deliver first and the team with the stone in the house will deliver second (have last stone in the end).
  9. Following the first end, the team that lost the previous end will have the ‘option’.
  10. If an end is blanked, the team which blanks will forfeit the ‘option’ for the next end.
  11. Before a stone can be delivered, the throwing member of each team who is not about to deliver must be holding the broom at the playing end.
  12. Each team will receive a 5-minute practice session prior to the start of each game. Team North America will practice first.

Procedures for match-ups and determining the ‘option’

  1. The captain for team Europe will be asked to name his/her starting line-up for the game on sheet A. The captain for Team North America will then name his/her line-up for the game on sheet A. The same procedure will take place for the games on sheets B and C. However, on sheet B, the captain for Team North America will first name his line-up followed by Team Europe. For the game on sheet C, it would again be the captain for Team Europe who will be asked to name his team first. The same procedure will be followed for the next set of three games, except this time the captain for Team North America will name his team first.
  2. When each team completes its practice session a single draw to the button will take place to determine who has the ‘option’. The holder of the ‘option’ must then determine whether they intend to have their stationary stone positioned in the house or as the guard. If they choose the stone position in the house, then they will have last stone in the first end.
  3. Match-ups for Mixed Doubles and the ‘option’ placement of the stationary stones will be completed Wednesday evening.
